BIOSS
Centre for Biological Signalling Studies

Space for Research

BIOSS’s laboratories are located in the eastern wing of the building on all three levels. These state-of-the-art laboratories with biosafety levels 1 and 2 provide perfect conditions for scientists conducting molecular research.

The research groups led by Prof. Dr. Maja Köhn, Prof. Dr. Michael Reth, Prof. Dr. Winfried Römer, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Schamel, Dr. Maximilian Ulbrich, Prof Dr Wilfried Weber, Dr. Susana Minguet and Dr. Julia Jellusova are all based here, as is the BIOSS Toolbox, which develops methods and provides lab services for BIOSS members and university staff. There is also a laboratory for practical courses offered by the University of Freiburg’s science departments and for the iGEM Laboratory and the summer school course in synthetic biology.

With the help of the BIOSS Toolbox, researchers can develop optical analysis methods with confocal, super resolution and atomic force microscopy. BIOSS Toolbox also has labs on the second floor that are equipped with automatisation technology, chromatography systems (HPLC/FPLC) and flow cytometry technology (bioreactors and fluorescence-activated cell sorting, FACS).
