Antibodies and Awards
In May 2019 the BIOSS speaker, Prof. Dr. Michael Reth, was elected as a foreign associate member of the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS). With this election his work on the structure and signaling function of the B cell antigen receptor and signaling processes in lymphocytes was honored. He became a member by signing in to the book of the Academy that was founded in 1863 by Abraham Lincoln.
There are currently 45 German scientists that are members of NAS and Dr. Reth is the second immunologist in Germany who receives this honor. This membership will also foster the close scientific relationship between Germany and the USA. Currently, Dr. Reth is working, together with 2 USA colleagues, on a new project aiming towards a better understanding how B lymphocytes are activated for the production of broadly neutralizing antibodies against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This project is funded by an R01 grant for the next 5 years.
